The Rota Vicentina is a long-distance hiking trail system along Portugal's southwestern Alentejo coast. We walked the northern Fishermen's Trail section—officially a 7-day route, though we extended it to 8 days to properly absorb the coastal scenery.
This trail follows dramatic Atlantic coastline, alternating between clifftop paths with sweeping ocean views and descents to secluded beaches rarely visited except by hikers. The landscape combines rugged beauty with surprising gentleness—wild surf below sheer cliffs, sheltered coves with crystal water, and coastal vegetation adapted to salt spray and wind.
The Rota Vicentina passes through small fishing villages where life follows traditional rhythms largely untouched by mass tourism. Each day's walk revealed new perspectives: morning light on cliffs, afternoon shadows across sand, evening arrivals in villages where we were often the only tourists.
These photographs capture the stunning scenery encountered along this remarkable coastal trail—a walking journey through one of Europe's most unspoiled coastlines.
